What do I drop in here?
A GPX or a FIT file. Both come out of
the same activity. They are two different things to ask for.
What is the difference?
- GPX is the route: where you went, as a line on a map.
Every running and cycling app exports it.
- FIT is the file your watch actually recorded. It works
for both indoor and outdoor runs. Outdoors it carries the
route just as a GPX does, plus cadence and your
laps. On Strava it is the Export Original button.
An outdoor FIT and a GPX of the same run make the same poster.
Drop whichever is easier to get.
What decides which poster I get?
Whether the file has GPS in it, and nothing else.
A file with a route gets the map poster. A file without one
gets an object: your pace turned into a shape you can hang.
Nothing here invents a route that was not run, so a treadmill
cannot have a map.
That is also how a FIT tells us it was indoors. Strava shows
Export GPX only for activities that recorded GPS, so a
treadmill run has no GPX at all and the FIT is the only file that
exists.
How do I get one from my app?
- Strava: open the activity on the website, the three-dot
menu, then Export GPX.
- Garmin Connect: open the activity, the gear icon top
right, then Export to GPX.
- Apple Watch or Fitness: Apple has no direct GPX export.
A helper app like HealthFit or RunGap makes one, or send the
workout to Strava first and export from there.
- Komoot: open the tour, the three-dot menu, then Export
GPX.
- Ride with GPS: open the ride, More, then Export as GPX.
- Coros, Suunto, Polar, Wahoo: open the activity in the
brand's app or website and choose Export GPX. These watches
record FIT natively, so an Export Original there gives you the
file the watch wrote.
On Strava,
Export Original sits in the same three-dot menu
as Export GPX and gives you the FIT. If Export GPX is missing, the
activity had no GPS and Export Original is what you want.

Is the preview free?
Yes, always. Previews carry a watermark. Exporting
a poster uses one credit, or is included on the power user plan,
which covers 40 exports every 24 hours. The first export is the one
that spends it, in whatever format you pick: the PNG, the SVG, or
the video of an indoor run. Everything else about that poster is
free afterwards. A video built without a credit still downloads,
carrying the same watermark a preview does.
Where do the map layers come from?
Contours come from open elevation data and streets
from OpenStreetMap. Full attribution is on the
data credits page.
Can I get it printed and shipped?
Yes, in 5x7, 8x10, 12x18, and 18x24. Render
your poster at one of those sizes and choose ORDER PRINT.
